Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde made a direct prayer to US President Donald Trump during an interfaith ceremony at Washington National Cathedral, asking him to have mercy on people in the US who are afraid, mainly immigrants and members of the LGBTQ community, writes A2 CNN.
"In the name of our Lord, I ask you to have mercy on the people in our country who are now afraid. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children among Democratic, Republican and independent families. Some are afraid for their lives. And the people, the people who harvest our crops. And clean our offices or who work in poultry and meat processing plants, who clean the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals," she said.
“They may not be citizens or have the proper documents. But most immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches and mosques, synagogues, temples. I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those communities whose children fear their parents will leave, and to help those who are fleeing war zones and persecution in their own land. May they find compassion and be welcomed here.”
Budde is bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, part of the Episcopal Church in the United States.
Asked later what he thought of her speech, Trump replied: "I didn't think it was a good service, no."
The president also posted a message on the social media site Truth, claiming that the bishop should apologize to him. "The so-called bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a radical leftist and a Trump hater. She brought the church into the world of politics in a very unflattering way. She did not mention the large number of illegal immigrants entering our country and killing people. Beyond the inappropriate statement, the service was boring and uninspiring. She is not doing her job very well! She and her church should publicly apologize to us." (A2 Televizion)
