In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected the new Pope, taking the name Leo XIV.
Robert Francis Prevost was born on September 14, 1955 in Chicago, USA. He is a member of the Order of Saint Augustine and served for many years as a missionary in Peru. Later, he headed the diocese of Chiclayo and was recognized for his commitment to building poor communities and educating young clergy. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in the Vatican – one of the most important positions in the Church’s structure.
With extensive international experience and a deep commitment to reform, the new Pope is seen as a figure who can continue the spirit of Pope Francis, but also bring more transparency, inclusion, and interfaith dialogue.
