"A matter of national pride" - Iran refuses to give up uranium

Iran has no intention of giving up uranium enrichment. According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi, Tehran will not take any steps back, despite the US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and the resulting damage. Enrichment has been halted because "the damage is severe and grave," the minister told US broadcaster Fox News on Monday.

"Now it has stopped because the damage is serious and severe. But obviously, we cannot give up our enrichment because it is an achievement of our scientists. And now, more than that, it is a matter of national pride. Our nuclear program, our enrichment program, is not something imported from abroad that can be destroyed by bombing. It was developed by ourselves; it is an achievement by ourselves. The technology is there. The scientists are there. The people who run these facilities are there. The buildings can be rebuilt. The facilities can be rebuilt. The machinery can be replaced because the technology is there. The latest attack proved that there is no military possibility to damage them," said Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister.

When asked whether enriched uranium was preserved despite the US strikes, the foreign minister said he had no "detailed information" on the matter. However, Iran's National Atomic Energy Agency is trying to determine exactly what happened to the enriched material.

US President Donald Trump, on his online service Truth Social, referred to Araghchi's statements that the nuclear facilities had been damaged: "Of course they were damaged, as I have already said. And we will do it again if necessary," Trump threatened. In the dispute over Iran's nuclear program, new negotiations are planned this week between Iran and the so-called E3 countries - Germany, France and Great Britain. The meeting is scheduled to take place on Friday in Istanbul at the level of deputy foreign ministers, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai said, according to the website of the daily newspaper "Etemad".
