UN: 100 percent of Gaza residents at risk of famine

Gaza is the “hungriest place on Earth,” the United Nations said on May 30, warning that the entire population of the Palestinian territory is now at risk of famine.

Negotiations to end the 20-month war in Gaza have so far failed to make progress, with Israel resuming operations in Gaza in March, ending a six-month ceasefire.

"Gaza is the hungriest place on Earth," said Jens Laerke, spokesman for the UN humanitarian aid agency, OCHA, according to A2.

"It is the only designated area – a state or designated territory within a state – where the entire population is at risk of famine. 100 percent of the population is at risk of famine," he said, dismissing Israeli claims to the contrary.

During a press conference in Geneva, Laerke detailed the difficulties the UN is facing in delivering humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

In recent days, Israel has partially eased the complete aid blockade on the Palestinian territory, which it imposed on March 2.

Laerke said 900 trucks with humanitarian aid have been authorized by Israel to enter Gaza since the blockade was partially lifted.

But so far only 600 trucks have delivered aid to the Gaza border, and only a small number of them have been received by Palestinians.

This week, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) – an organization supported by Israel and the United States – has been distributing aid from several centers in the Gaza Strip this week.

This organization has faced accusations that it helps Israel fulfill its military goals.

Asked about the operations of this organization, Laerke said "it's not working. It's not meeting people's needs. It's creating chaos."/ REL (A2 Televizion)
