The UN raises the alarm: 16 million people need urgent humanitarian aid in Syria

The representative of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Syria, Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, has stated that 16 million people in Syria are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

He told the BBC World Service that recent fighting in the region has displaced 800,000 Syrians. Before that, 7 million Syrians had been internally displaced, while more than 5 million had fled to neighboring countries and beyond.

Llosa emphasized that the humanitarian situation is very difficult, with urgent needs and many forced displacements of the population. He mentioned that UNHCR's humanitarian operations in war-affected areas such as Homs, Hama and Damascus are slowly resuming. "Any space that becomes safe, we immediately go with our partners to fill that humanitarian gap," Llosa added.

This appeal comes at a time when Syria continues to face a deep humanitarian crisis, calling for international assistance to provide support to millions of people affected by war and crisis. After the ouster of Assad, Mohamed al Bashir was appointed interim prime minister. (A2 Televizion)
