Pope Francis has given his consent to Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples. The news was reported by the Italian media, and it means that the ban imposed earlier by the competent Vatican committee is no longer in force.
However, it becomes clear that this does not mean that religious marriage of same-sex couples is allowed.
It is the first time that the Catholic Church has spoken clearly on this subject, referring to "a blessing for the health, mutual help, support and peace of mind" of same-sex couples.
The move is considered a major step in the efforts of the head of the Catholic Church to welcome the faithful of the LGBT + community to the church's teachings on marriage.
For a long time now, Pope Francis has allowed priests to bless a wide variety of people. However, the Vatican had opposed the blessing of same-sex couples.
The new rule was presented by the prefect of the competent office, Cardinal Vitor Manuel Fernandez, who noted that the statement does not modify the "traditional church doctrine on marriage" as it does not allow any liturgical ceremony that could be confused with sacramental marriage.
