The 27 leaders of the European Union have decided on Thursday to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.
The bloc also decided to grant Georgia the status of a candidate country, which was denied in previous attempts.
"A clear sign of hope for their peoples and for the continent," declared Charles Michel, the president of the European Council on the latest news from Brussels.
Likewise, it is expected that the Union will open negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina after the necessary degree of compliance with the membership criteria is reached. This was announced by the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the day before in a press conference.
The European Commission will have to report by March on the progress made by the Balkan country in order to decide the next steps.
Thursday's breakthrough, reached during the EU-Western Balkans summit in Brussels, comes amid threats by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to veto Ukraine's membership of the Union.
The latter has described the opening of membership talks with Ukraine as a wrong decision.
"Ukraine is not really capable of starting negotiations, but because of the war, for geostrategic reasons, let's say political, they have to open negotiations with them. I think this is a mistake... We are destroying the European Union. " (A2 Televizion)
