Israel is returning to full-scale war in the Gaza Strip in the middle of the holy month of Ramadan. At least 13 people were killed in overnight airstrikes on the Palestinian enclave.
Civilians living in tents have not been spared, the Red Cross confirms. The Tel Aviv army claims to have hit targets it called Hamas military zones, from where the group is believed to be preparing attacks against Israel. These developments come after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the fighting would resume with full force, prompting the threat that "this is just the beginning."
The bombings were not on the same scale as those on Tuesday, when more than 400 people were reported killed. The attacks the day before were considered the heaviest since a fragile ceasefire and hostage-taking deal came into effect on January 19.
Israel and Hamas have so far failed to reach a plan to move to the second phase of the ceasefire, which would include the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Netanyahu has faced anger from protesters outside parliament in Jerusalem after deciding to resume the war in Gaza.
One of the banners read the phrase: “The future of the coalition or the future of Israel.” This refers to the accusation leveled at Netanyahu that he prioritizes the stability of his government over the security of the country and the lives of Israeli hostages. (A2 Televizion)
