The death toll from the collapse of a nightclub roof in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has risen to 184, with hundreds more injured, according to international media reports.
At least 50 people were pulled out alive. Among the victims were merengue singer Rubby Perez, who was performing when the collapse occurred, as well as former baseball players. There were an estimated 500-1,000 people in the nightclub.
Local media reports that Rubby's death has shocked the Latin music world. His family confirmed the news in a statement posted on their social media: "With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved Rubby Pérez. We are deeply grateful for the love, support and solidarity we have received during this painful time. His musical and human legacy will live on in our hearts. May he rest in peace."
Local authorities such as the emergency director, the ministers of Defense and Health, and President Luis Abinader went to the scene and expressed their regret for the tragedy.
"We are deeply sorry for this tragedy. We have been following the case minute by minute. All agencies are providing the necessary assistance and are working tirelessly," Abinader said.
The injured taken to the hospital by ambulance are thought to be around a hundred. (A2 Televizion)
