Pope Francis had refused to receive his salary and before he died he donated 200,000 euros to the prisoners of the Roman prison of Regina Coeli.
With this donation, Pope Francis reminded once again how his work is marked by prudence. The money was taken from his personal account, but his latest gesture raised a question: How much does the Pope really earn? And how much do the cardinals earn?
The Pope does not have a fixed salary. Since 2013, Pope Francis has renounced any personal compensation, putting into practice the poverty and simplicity he embraced by choosing the name of Poverello of Assisi.
According to some sources, he was entitled to a symbolic salary (equal to that of Benedict XVI) of around 2,500 euros per month, but he never received it. All his expenses ( food, accommodation, transport, healthcare, security ) were covered entirely by the Holy See. Francis then chose to live in the Domus Sanctae Marthae, instead of the papal residence, as another choice of humility.
In addition to his salary and residence, each pontiff theoretically has access to Peter's Pence, a Vatican fund fed by donations from the faithful and intended to finance the Church's charitable and missionary initiatives.
Until 2021, the cardinals of the Roman Curia received a monthly salary of between 4,000 and 5,500 euros. But with the decree of cuts of March 2021, requested by Pope Francis in response to the pandemic economic crisis, a 10% cut was applied, which was then followed by further reductions in allowances. Today, the average salary for a Cardinal is around 5,000 euros per month.
Meanwhile, Bishops receive around 3,000 euros per month, while priests have an average salary of around 1,200 euros. Finally, monks and nuns do not receive any real income unless they hold roles with specific responsibilities. (A2 Televizion)
