"Let's tear down the walls of division," Pope Leo criticizes

Pope Leo criticized the rise of nationalist political movements on Sunday, calling them a disaster. Without specifically naming any country or leader, the Pope told tens of thousands of faithful in St. Peter's Square that the Church must open borders, tear down walls and reject hatred and indifference, A2 CNN reports.

Leo XIV, former Cardinal Robert Prevost, was elected on May 8 to succeed the late Pope Francis as leader of the 1.4 billion-member Church. Before becoming pope, he had been unabashedly critical of President Donald Trump and his tough anti-immigration policies.

"People must overcome fear of those who are different. Where there is love, there is no room for prejudice, for security zones that separate us from our neighbors, or for the exclusionary mentality that we are now tragically seeing in political nationalisms," were the words of Pope Leo in his Sunday sermon.
