Ukraine strikes oil depots inside Russia

Ukraine claimed responsibility for two attacks on oil depots in western Russia, the latest act in Kiev's air campaign against strategic Russian targets.

Kiev's General Staff said its forces had struck overnight depots located in the Kaluga and Tula regions that had served to support Moscow's efforts against Ukraine.

The damage is still being assessed, the statement said.

Kaluga regional governor Vladislav Shapsha announced in a Telegram post that a fire had broken out in the town of Lyudinovo after an industrial zone was hit. He later said that seven drones had been shot down.

Ukrainian forces have stepped up attacks inside Russia, mainly on oil depots and facilities that produce military equipment, in an attempt to halt Russia's advance in eastern Ukraine.

Russia has also carried out regular air strikes on Ukrainian cities. On Saturday, four people were killed after a rocket attack in central Kiev.

As the war enters its third year, Ukraine and Russia have sought to strengthen their positions on the battlefield ahead of the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20. Mr. Trump has said he will end the war very soon. (A2 Televizion)
