The United Nations is warning that a severe shortage of medical supplies is hampering the response to the deadly earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday as the search for survivors continues. More than 1,600 people were killed and about 340 injured after the 7.7-magnitude quake, which was also felt in neighboring countries including Thailand, A2 CNN reports.

The US Geological Survey estimates that the final death toll in Myanmar could reach 10,000, with damage exceeding the country's annual economic output. In Bangkok, another body was pulled from the rubble of a high-rise building that collapsed in the earthquake, bringing the total to 12, while in Myanmar, a woman was pulled alive after being trapped in the rubble for 30 hours, A2 CNN reports.

The deadliest natural disaster to hit Myanmar in years damaged critical infrastructure, including airports, highways and bridges, hampering humanitarian operations.

The tragedy affects a country that was already plunged into chaos, with a civil war escalating since the 2021 military coup that toppled elected leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and sparked an armed uprising.

The government of national unity, which is in exile, announced a two-week pause in two-week military operations in areas affected by the earthquake. (A2 Televizion)
