US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he would likely impose sanctions on Russia if its President Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate to end the war in Ukraine.
President Trump did not provide details on possible additional sanctions. The United States has already imposed severe sanctions on Russia over its aggression in Ukraine in February 2022.
He said his administration was also looking into the issue of sending weapons to Ukraine, adding his view that the European Union should do more to support Ukraine.
"We're talking to (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelensky, we'll be talking very soon to President Putin," Mr Trump said.
He said he had pressured Chinese President Xi Jinping in a phone call to intervene to stop the war in Ukraine.
"He hasn't done much about it. He has a lot of ... power, just like we have a lot of power. I said, 'We have to fix this. We discussed this issue,'" President Trump added.
Shortly after his inauguration, President Trump said that by not negotiating an end to its war with Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin is “destroying Russia.” VOA (A2 Televizion)
