Rising energy prices in Kosovo, citizens warn of protests this week

The Energy Regulatory Office (ERO) has announced a 15% increase in the price of electricity in Kosovo, a decision that has caused great concern and dissatisfaction among public opinion.

On Saturday, April 5, 2025, a protest against the increase in the price of electricity will be held in Pristina, where activists and citizens will gather to oppose the increase in the price of electricity.

Citizens, businesses, and economic experts have expressed concern that this increase will negatively impact the economy of families and various sectors, increasing the financial burden on many social groups.

Former Minister of Trade, Ismet Mulaj, has stated that the 15% increase in the price of electricity will favor private energy operators, harming citizens.

"This decision will be in the interest of private economic operators that trade electricity, rather than in favor of citizens," Mulaj emphasized.

According to Mulaj, more than 1,300 businesses will switch to the free market, where they will purchase energy from private operators.

"Over 1,300 businesses will enter the free market and those businesses that enter the free market will buy energy from operators. This gives operators room to profit and thus harms citizens."

"If 1,000-2,000 businesses enter the free market, why then should there be an increase in the price of electricity?" says Mulaj. (A2 Televizion)
