The Basic Court in Peja has sentenced Edmond Lajqin to life imprisonment, accused of murdering his wife, Gj.U.
In pronouncing the sentence, judge Musë Povataj said that Lajqi committed the crime of "serious murder", while the accused was not punished for possessing a weapon without a permit until the weapon with which the crime was committed was confiscated.
The decision was welcomed by the family of the deceased. Her brother said that this sentence eased "somewhat of the pain".
On April 16 of this year, Lajqi killed his wife with a firearm in their apartment in Peja. After the act, he surrendered to the Kosovo Police.
Lajqi pleaded guilty during the court session on December 24.
The indictment against him was filed in November of this year and it was stated that the murder was committed in the morning of April 16.
According to the indictment, Lajqi had continuous problems with his wife, now deceased, Gj.U, and the same is said to have exercised psychological violence against her.
Human rights organizations and institutions have often raised concerns about violence against women, and campaigns to combat violence against women are also organized in the country.
According to the data, in the last 14 years in Kosovo, 58 women have been killed.
Human rights organizations have, in some cases, blamed the authorities for failing to protect women at risk of violence. In most cases, the perpetrators of the murders were the husbands, then the fathers and the sons./ REL
