Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani stated that the draft statute of the Association of Serb-majority Municipalities, proposed by the European Union, would not receive the approval of the Constitutional Court if it were to go for evaluation. She made these statements during a press conference together with her Latvian counterpart, Edgars Rinkevics, who was in Pristina on an official visit on Thursday.
"Personally, I believe that they are not in accordance with the Constitution of Kosovo, nor are they in accordance with the norms and standards of the European Union and the values of the Council of Europe. They are also not in accordance with the decision of the Constitutional Court of 2015 and such a draft statute that contradicts these three cannot enter into force and I do not believe that it would pass any test in the Constitutional Court."
Osmani hopes that with the arrival of the new European Union envoy for the dialogue, Peter Sorensen, the balance in this process will be restored. Optimistic about the role of Sorensen and the new EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, was also expressed by the leader of Latvia, who encouraged Kosovo and Serbia to continue the talks.
"At this point where we are, the dialogue must continue. We have the new High Representative and we discussed the visit of the dialogue emissary. If good preconditions are created for the continuation of the dialogue based on equality and key principles that all countries that want to become part of the EU share with each other, then this dialogue will yield tangible results ," said the Latvian president.
Osmani also asked the European Union to give a clear response to Serbia, which, according to her, is continuously trying to tense the situation and bring the region back from the past and conflicts.
"Kosovo has done its best to contribute to regional stability, despite the fact that in the last two years we have had attacks of aggression from Serbia in the north of our country with the clear aim of annexing our territory according to the Russian model of annexation."
Kosovo also demands that the European Union's punitive measures be lifted, to which the Latvian president also agreed.
"My country's position is that the European Union should lift the restrictive measures. Latvia's position is very clear. We think that punitive measures should be lifted and for this we advocate in the European Union and will continue to do so. My conviction is that the sooner this happens, the better it will be."
Regarding granting candidate country status to Kosovo, Rinkevics said that this is a joint decision-making of the European Union member states, but that Latvia supports Kosovo on its path towards membership in Euro-Atlantic structures. (A2 Televizion)
