Kosovo is exposed to disinformation and narratives coming from Russia and China, which aim to instigate inter-ethnic and inter-religious war in the country, criminalize NATO and reduce society's trust in Euro-Atlantic integration. This is the conclusion reached by the report titled "Whirlwind of sand", drawn up by the Balkan Investigative Journalism Network (BIRN), and supported by the European Union.
During the analysis, 44 articles were identified as materials that distribute propaganda from abroad, 14 publications that claim to harm the security of the state of Kosovo, and hundreds more distributed related to the economy and the COVID-19 pandemic.
"There is a narrative that aims to instigate war within Kosovo, there is a narrative that aims that NATO and the EU only support the Albanian community in Kosovo and not the Serbian community in Kosovo, there is a narrative that aims to criminalize NATO- n", said Kreshnik Gashi, Editor-in-Chief, Kallxo.com.
Thus, according to the 102-page report, the West's support for the Kosovo Security Force (FSK) has been interpreted as an attempt to support a war of Albanians against Serbs.
"Another narrative that is not large in number within Kosovo, but was generated after the crisis in the north, which aimed to show that NATO is not supporting the Albanian community in the actions they are doing in the north, but is supporting the Serbs and this gives us the first signals that a narrative against NATO and the EU has started to develop in the Albanian part", he said.
Another narrative identified in the report is the one against integration into the European Union, aiming to portray the EU as something bad for Kosovo. As for the disinformation originating from China, the aim is to promote the United States as something bad, as a country with high criminality and problems with the rule of law. The head of the EU Office in Kosovo, Tomas Szunyog, said that Kosovo is affected by external influence and propaganda aimed at hindering integration towards the European bloc. (A2 Televizion)
