Eugena Tomini, director of the Institute of Public Health, says that the 17-year-old was infected by a severe form of meningitis, which killed her within a few hours.
Nearly 100 contact persons, family members, classmates, teachers, medical personnel in Durrës and Tirana are under epidemiological investigation. All have undergone testing, but also the initial treatment, while they will be monitored for the next 10 days, the incubation period of meningitis.
The meningitis vaccine that prevents serious consequences of the disease is not part of the mandatory vaccination schedule.
