For more than 20 hours, dozens of firefighting forces have been trying to bring under control the flames that engulfed the mountain of urban waste near the Elbasan incinerator near the former metallurgical area. In addition to the fire departments of the 7 municipalities of the Elbasan district, the fire departments of Berat, Kamza and Tirana, civil emergencies and volunteer forces were also involved in this operation.
Despite continuous efforts, plumes of smoke were still present throughout Wednesday, causing severe ecological pollution and making life difficult for thousands of residents who live near and far from the waste dump.
In fact, the situation near the Elbasan incinerator landfill, which has not been working for many months, has been warned several times. In February, A2 CNN re-examined this issue at the landfill where at least 100 tons of urban waste per day from the 7 municipalities of Elbasan are deposited. And in conditions where this waste is not processed in the incinerator, its collection constitutes a serious problem, which has also been warned by environmentalists.
Faced with this situation, the incinerator administrator stated off-camera that the institutions have been notified of the situation and the inability to operate because the incinerator is under seizure by the Elbasan prosecutor's office and SPAK in connection with investigations into violations suspected to have been committed during its construction and administration.
