Pope Francis' messages when he visited Albania

On September 21, 2014, Pope Francis made a historic one-day visit to Albania, starting from Tirana on his first trip to Europe after his election as Pope. He was enthusiastically welcomed by around 300,000 citizens and believers, regardless of religion or nationality, who had filled the “Dëshmorët e Kombit” Boulevard to greet him.

Pope Francis chose Albania as a symbol of a country that has gone through a dark period of dictatorship and that today represents a unique model of religious coexistence between Catholics, Orthodox and Muslims. With humility and love, he greeted those present from an open car, without strong security measures, emphasizing his closeness to the people.

In his speeches, the Pope praised the resilience of Albanians in the face of persecution and described Albania as a “nation of eagles” and a “land of martyrs.” During the mass held in Mother Teresa Square, he preached peace, hope, and interfaith dialogue.

The Holy Father also visited the Catholic University “Our Lady of Good Counsel” and the “Betania” center in Bubq, where he met children in need. He left his clear message: “Religion should not be used as a tool for violence and division, but as a source of peace.”

The visit ended in the evening at the "Mother Teresa" airport, where the Pope was escorted by Prime Minister Edi Rama. With this visit, Pope Francis left a deep mark on the hearts of Albanians and gave a powerful message to the whole world: to take an example from the harmony and spiritual strength of Albania.
