Corruption and barriers to information sharing among government agencies, insufficient coordination, and a weak judicial system continued to hamper rule of law efforts at all levels in Albania, including those related to the fight against terrorism.
This is the finding made by the US Department of State, in the report on terrorism in 2022. However, the report appreciates the strong support that Albania has offered to international efforts against terrorism, repatriating 13 of its compatriots from the Al Hol camp in Syria, and engaged in their reintegration throughout the year.
"The country has adopted a national strategy against terrorism and violent extremism by revising its strategy. The threat of terrorism in Albania consists of the efforts of foreign organizations to radicalize the Albanian youth".
The report states that during 2022 there were no terrorist incidents in Albania, while the charges brought by the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime against two people who instigated propaganda in favor of the terrorist organization ISIS are mentioned.
In December, DASH continues, an Iranian citizen was sentenced to 15 years in prison for preparing terrorist acts.
So, as far as Kosovo is concerned, DASH criticizes the low sentences for charges related to terrorism and early releases for these charges. The report assesses that "security issues and political instability in the north of Kosovo continue to limit the ability of the Government of Kosovo to extend its authority in that region.
