Albania will strengthen border controls and increase cooperation with international partners, with the aim of preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The Ministry of Defense has issued for public consultation a national strategy, which envisages increasing national security, by preventing Albania from becoming a place of transit, production, purchase, or possession of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons.
With biological or chemical content, from radiological or nuclear materials... Albania risks being used as a crossing point for the trafficking of Weapons of Mass Destruction by terrorist groups. This is the concern of the Ministry of Defense, which has drafted the National Strategy for the Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction in order to strengthen border control.
"Weapons of Mass Destruction in the possession of hostile states or terrorists represent one of the security challenges facing the region and the entire international community. Albania's geostrategic situation, at the crossroads of connections with Europe as a whole and other continents, exposes our country to trafficking in WMD, raw materials for their production, as well as delivery systems."
Currently, the United States, South Korea, India, Libya, and Russia possess the largest stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction. With geopolitical tensions rising, fears of the use of such weapons are growing worldwide.
"The international security landscape is becoming increasingly challenging due to developments in recent years in the geostrategic sphere. The world order is currently experiencing the challenges of the aggressive display of military force not only to change and expand territorial borders, but also the impacts of geopolitical changes and threats in the field of security and defense, using at all times technological weapons in cyberspace, and those of the military industry, as tools against social, economic and political stability."
After becoming the first country in the world in 2007 to eliminate weapons of mass destruction, Albania aims to become a factor in preventing their spread in the world.
“The Republic of Albania does not possess WMD, and will not develop or support any activity that leads to their proliferation or financing, but will contribute with all capacities to the improvement and creation of national mechanisms interoperable with international ones, as well as an efficient and integral system for the prevention, interdiction and control of actions related to the proliferation of WMD.”
According to the strategy put out for Public Consultation, Albania will increase investments in artificial intelligence to improve threat detection. Physical assets, data centers and critical infrastructure will be better protected against the risk of weapons of mass destruction.
Also under surveillance will be financial transfers and business brokerage activities, which may be related to the proliferation of such weapons. (A2 Televizion)
