The Albanian government has approved a new decision this Thursday regarding the increase in security measures in pre-university educational institutions. In the last meeting of the Council of Ministers, it was decided that two security officers will be present in high schools with more than 900 students.
The new decision clearly sets out the criteria for deploying security officers in schools, based on the number of students. According to this decision:
"In institutions of upper secondary education (gymnasium), vocational secondary education and oriented secondary education that have over 80 students, a security officer will be present. In basic or joint education schools with more than 350 students, a security officer will also be assigned. In institutions with over 900 students - including gymnasiums, oriented and basic schools - two security officers will be assigned. For vocational secondary education schools that exceed the quota of 700 students, two security officers are also provided," the decision states.
The decision in question is part of an expanded plan to ensure safety in schools, through continuous interaction between security officers, students, teaching staff and the community.
The number of officers and related expenses will be covered by funds approved by the Ministry of Education and Sports, depending on the type of institution.
This step is considered a reinforcement of school safety policies, at a time when issues with incidents or events in educational settings have become more sensitive in public opinion, following the shocking incident at the "Fan Noli" school, where 14-year-old Martin Cani was stabbed to death after a fight between minors.
