UNESCO recommends that the Vjosa Valley be declared a Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO has recommended that the Vjosa Valley be declared a Biosphere Reserve and approval is expected in September.

The news was announced by the Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mirela Kumbaro, through a post on her Facebook page.

Kumbaro described this step as an extraordinary international appreciation for the untouched nature and the continuous efforts to preserve the last wild river in Europe.

"The Vjosa today is not just a river, but a model of sustainable development, where nature inspires," writes Kumbaro, reports A2 CNN.

The final inclusion of the Vjosa Valley in the list of Biosphere Reserves is expected to be approved in September by the relevant UNESCO Council, placing this natural asset on a global pedestal.

Good day with news that fills us with emotion and pride: #UNESCO has given the official recommendation that the Vjosa Valley be declared a Biosphere Reserve

It is more than an international recognition — it is recognition of the wild beauty of the Vjosa, gratitude for the people of those regions who live in harmony with nature, and for the joint efforts in protecting Europe's last wild river ????????

And nothing happened by chance, but comes after a very intensive work of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and the National Agency for Protected Areas, from the first visit of UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay to Vjosa in February 2023, to the tireless work of protected areas specialists who followed every step with dedication and professionalism.

Today, Vjosa is not just a river, but a MODEL of sustainable development, where nature inspires, while in September of this year, final approval is expected from the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves Council for the inclusion of Vjosa in the list of world heritage sites as a hymn to nature and people.
