Although over three decades have passed, as a legacy of the communist past, 40 tons of toxic chemicals, including arsenic, cyanide and mercury, are stored in the area of the Ammonium Nitrate Plant in Fier, known as the former Azotiku. The health of about 5 thousand residents of the villages of Zhupan, Drizë and Plyk is at risk from both polluted air and water, writes A2 CNN. Therefore, the Azotike Fertilizer Plant itself, despite being out of operation, has opened a tender to monitor the level of pollution in that area.
Monitoring is the process that carries out the systematic assessment of environmental indicators, the process of observation, data collection, analysis and reporting on a continuous or periodic basis on the environmental situation affected by landfill activity. Environmental monitoring is carried out in accordance with the National Monitoring Program.

The tender document published by the Public Procurement Agency also defines the tasks that the winning company that will conduct the measurements will have.
All measuring equipment used in this monitoring should be defined, for each required element, and special attention should be paid to the description of the equipment and the method of determining the two specific elements Arsenic and Mercury, given the significant impact that these landfills present on the environment.

Despite the deactivation and burial of waste, including arsenic waste, in the area of the former Azotik in Fier, a study of the composition of the soil and groundwater in the area has not yet been carried out to see the long-term impact of this waste. The completion of this process has also been dictated as a condition by the European Union.
