Nearly 710 billion lek, the state coffers were filled during 2024 like never

Nearly 710 billion lek or 7.1 billion euros. That's how much money went into the state coffers last year. Data from the Ministry of Finance shows that this amount is 65.9 billion lek or 10.2 percent higher than in 2023.

"This is good news for the state budget, but not for citizens and businesses. The latter are paying more. We lack an analysis that shows how much evasion and informality have narrowed. Through them we could also measure the overall performance of policies," economic expert Zef Preçi told A2 CNN.

However, despite the positive performance last year, it was not possible to bring in as much money as planned. The Ministry of Finance had planned to collect 714 billion lek in the past 12 months, but only 709.5 billion were collected.

"This should serve as a reason for not always having only optimistic forecasts in the future, but for us to also stay grounded. Fiscal exemptions and the incompetence of the administration are other reasons that have led to this progress," Preçi added.

Two of the main causes identified last year that negatively affected revenue generation were the devaluation of currencies, which negatively affected customs revenues, but on the other hand, the abolition of the 15% tax for freelancers also lowered revenue expectations. (A2 Televizion)
