The speed of Albania's movement towards the European Union depends on its municipalities. Before knocking on the doors of the "union", the country must also be ready at the local level.
Arbjan Mazniku, Minister of State for Local Government, stated: “Issues related to agricultural development, rural development, local infrastructure in agricultural areas will happen at the local level. Some of the largest European Union programs, such as the social cohesion fund or structural funds, will directly impact the way municipalities operate with their business or structures in their territory.”
But, for a "yes" instead of a "no", on the difficult path to membership with the ambitious objective of 2030, the municipalities have several requests, also revealing their main complaints, writes A2.
Josif Gorrea, mayor of Divjaka Municipality, said: "Agriculture and waste remain two main problems in our municipality that need to be solved."
Gledian Llatja, mayor of Elbasan, said: "We cannot do tourism while the pine trees in our forest areas have been threatened by the processionary moth for a long time."
To solve these problems, the government will help with a bridge, the Minister of State for Local Government: "Municipalities should prepare and begin to exercise these functions as we approach the new moment that we will have as Albania with the European Union."
During the meeting between the Minister of State for Local Government and the mayors, the heads of opposition local government units such as Fushë-Arrëz and Mirditë were also present. (A2 Televizion)
