Although it shouldn't be, the use of older cars continues to increase across the country. The condition of integration into the European Union for a wide use of new cars, mainly electric ones, has not been met as the age has already reached up to 22 years.
Albania ranks second in Europe after Poland, for the high use of vehicles over 20 years old, becoming one of the main factors of pollution.
"The age of cars increases and the engine burns harder and therefore emits more elements of pollution. These increase exponentially with the age of the cars", said Françeska Korançe, environmental expert.
In the audit conducted by the High State Control, it is evident that the total number of road vehicles in the last 7 years has increased by about 220,000, of which 158,000 are diesel vehicles, which directly affect air pollution. In the face of the growing trend, environmental experts raise a problem with the lack of air quality monitoring.
"KTA or other institutions will not measure air quality. "Albania is obliged to give an annual or 2-year report, which is a condition to be included in Europe," she said.
The oldest, but also the most problematic, are the buses whose age reaches up to 22 years.
"In recent reports that have been made by organizations, most have been from gasoline and benzene pollutants and it has a lot of impact. That fleet continues throughout the day and circulates every year without changing", added Korançe.
KLSH points out that concrete measures and solutions to improve the road transport sector in order to improve air quality have not been fully integrated into other government strategic documents. Despite the fact that a plan for a sustainable transport that would help solve the problem has been drawn up, it has not yet been approved. (A2 Televizion)
