It is the most agricultural country in Europe, the second in terms of water resources after Norway, with abundant underground oil and a climate desired by many, but it has the highest dependence on imports. With an economic model that is more like a "puzzle" that seems to be taking a long time to take the right shape, with cafes and fast-foods as the most widespread businesses, the country is increasingly dependent in other directions, such as remittances and foreign investment.
"A country develops, it must develop its assets. All wars historically have been fought over the land, we leave the land unworked. Instead of exporting labor power, we should use the assets above and below the ground to grow", said Maksim Caslli, an expert on the economy.
Due to leaving the land "barren", as a result of abandonment by people, Albania sold one and bought three food products in the months of January-October. Data from the Institute of Statistics show that less than 326 thousand tons of fruits, vegetables and other products for consumption were exported. In the same period of time, more than 919 thousand tons of food were imported.
"When we say economic independence, you must develop those primary, main needs of society, in a high percentage, in your country, as happened in the wheat crisis after the war in Ukraine", he added.
After more than 30 years of transition, the Albanian economy is proving unable to improve and even less to change itself, continuing to be fragile in the face of almost any crisis, even thousands of kilometers away.
"No requires the diversification of the economy. If a certain crisis affects a certain part of the economy, where we have diversification, then the ability to protect is greater", said Caslli.
After 111 years as an independent state, at a time when other states are trying to find new development models, there is little effort in the country to move away from the backward and non-productive economic model to go to the advanced that produces. (A2 Televizion)
