Erion Veliaj, the imprisoned mayor of Tirana, has begun his legal battle for freedom. Through his lawyer, Ermir Beta, Veliaj has challenged in the Special Appeal the court's decision to impose the security measure "prison arrest".
Sources close to the mayor's defense staff said that the appeal concerns the February 9 decision of Judge Erion Bani, for the imposition of the measure that led to his detention in absentia. The appeal material was sent to the court by mail.
Among them, Veliaj requests the annulment of the "prison arrest" measure in which he has been held since February 10, considering it disproportionate. After its registration, the Special Appeal will draw lots for the appeal and then set a date for the review.
Meanwhile, in the coming days, within the legal deadlines, Veliaj is expected to file an appeal against the February 12 decision, which confirmed the security measure "prison arrest".
The mayor of Tirana is suspected by SPAK of "passive corruption" and "money laundering" in the same investigation that has also raised suspicions of criminal offenses committed by his wife, Ajola Xoxa, and six businessmen.
According to SPAK, the Veliaj-Xoxa spouses have set up a corrupt scheme, abusing public municipal funds with the ultimate goal of their personal enrichment. (A2 Televizion)
