Almost every mafia-type assassination is followed by the burning of the tools used by the perpetrators, as well as the firearms they used. But it was different in the two recent assassinations in the country, the one in Tirana where 4 people were injured and the one in Lezha where a 64-year-old man was executed with a Kalashnikov rifle.
The assailants only burned the vehicles, but the firearms remained in their hands, becoming a potential source of other criminal activity.
"A2 CNN learns that nearly 650 firearms of various types and calibers have been seized over the past 15 months across the country. 100 of which were seized from January to March of this year alone. The phenomenon of illegal possession of firearms has been increasing recently, thus becoming a concern for the State Police."
The highest number of seizures is made by pistols. There is also a lack of automatic weapons such as Kalashnikovs or sporting weapons. A good part of them turn out to be sophisticated and trafficked from abroad.
400 people have been arrested, mainly between the ages of 30 and 50. They were mostly caught during routine checks carried out in public vehicles and environments. But a worrying signal is the fact that the cases show that children are also carrying weapons. There have also been cases where firearms have been found with minors under the age of 14.
