Former President of Albania, Alfred Moisiu, has come out in support of the return of compulsory military service, describing it not only as a necessity for defense, but also as a form of education and strengthening the sense of patriotism.
In an interview for the show "Off the Record" with Andrea Dangli on A2 CNN, Moisiu brought concrete examples from Western countries and the Middle East.
"Germany has to bring it back. It's a nation of 80 million, it needs to have an army. This work can't be done with volunteers. Military service is education."
The former president also mentioned Israel as a model to consider:
"Look at Israel, it's only 8 million, but it puts 100 million Arabs ahead of it. He lives in America, but he's Israeli, he comes and does military service, boy or girl."
According to Moisiu, military service is also closely linked to the decline in the sense of patriotism in Albania: "This also has to do with patriotism, but here patriotism has declined. The master pulls the donkey out of the mud, we have this popular saying." (A2 Televizion)
