The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, during a press conference said that the Democratic Party will offer a complete solution for compensation for former political victims during the first governing mandate.
Berisha stressed that the 2006 agreement is outdated and that the DP will change the laws to eliminate the restrictions that prevent compensation for these persons, writes A2 CNN.
Berisha also expressed his commitment to the integration of this layer into institutions and the application of decommunization standards. He also announced that the DP will work for a final solution to property issues in Albania.
Excerpt from Berisha's speech:
The layer of politically persecuted constitutes the political and moral fiber of the DP.
The DP is determined that in the next mandate it will provide a final solution to the great obligations that Albanian society has towards this stratum.
If we talk about a program, it is nothing more than the major obligation of reparations for the slave labor that tens of thousands of politically persecuted people have performed in the camps and prisons of the dictatorship over the course of 46 years.
Their full compensation is our commitment to this layer.
In fact, the 2006 agreement, on which the framework for compensation was determined, is outdated, as current laws have their own limitations and Edi Rama, by proclaiming communism and the communist regime as the righteous side of history, even though it was the darkest side of history, has almost completely ignored the compensation of this layer, its marginalization.
I just came from a very fruitful meeting, a broad discussion with this layer, and we agreed on a new agreement between the DP and the layer of the politically persecuted, their representatives, so that it will be our governing program.
There can no longer be any kind of justification without making all the legal changes, which are atavisms of the communist regime in some aspects over qualifications for 'terrorist acts' or sabotage, which had no other purpose than the fight against the dictatorship.
We cannot stop continuing with positive discrimination practices in all aspects until balance is created between the layers of the population and cohesion between them.
The integration of the politically persecuted class into the country's institutions and forums is also necessary.
As well as the application of new standards of decommunization, based on international resolutions.
So, the DP pledges to provide a definitive answer to the problems of compensation for the persecuted during its first mandate.
I look forward to a new agreement in the form of a contract with this layer.
I would also like to inform you that we will do the same thing with the owners.
The next mandate of the DP will be the mandate of the final resolution of property and ownership issues in Albania. (A2 Televizion)
