Besnik Mustafaj does not agree with Sali Berisha, when the DP chairman says that the party is today stronger than ever. "Today PD is stronger than three years ago. It is much more important that it is stronger than three years ago, clearer and more renewed. And without any doubt it is the most democratic party in the Albanian political scene", said Mustafaj in an interview on "Off the Record" with Andrea Dangli on A2 CNN.
Asked why a better leader than Berisha could not be found, he answered: "I believe in the process. Sali Berisha was returned through a process, which was returned by the democrats. For me, the process is very important. Could someone else be found? The other one should have come out."
According to Mustafaj, leaving PD in the direction of Lulzim Basha was a mistake. "He made a big mistake with Lulzim Basha, I have criticized since 2013, the appointment of Lulzim Basha by Sali Berisha, in a certain way. In 2017, it was more of a caricature, but I criticized it, because in 2013 there were candidates like Sokol Olldashi, there were also other candidates," he said.
For the candidacies that DP proposed for the local elections of 2023, the primaries system was used, i.e. elections within the party. Something like this, Mustafaj says, was proposed ten years before it was realized, to elect the new president when the Democratic Party went into opposition. "I proposed in a public letter to the DP leadership that a race of the type of primaries be held in America. For all the candidates to make a pact to recognize the winner and continue to pounce on each other. And the Democrats choose better. And you said six months, that it was the beginning of the opposition, it wouldn't hurt if it was led by a triumvirate of veterans, people like my work, who had retired from politics but who could devote six months of their lives to the Democratic Party. Sali Berisha said, in private, that this formula would encourage the Democrats in a witch hunt. Which could be a little true. But great job! There would be recovery time." (A2 Televizion)
