Former Democratic Party MP Ervin Salianji is released on parole from prison, almost three months before the end of his one-year sentence, which he was serving for false reporting in the case known as "Babale".
The decision was made this Tuesday at the Fier Court. Judge Noel Veizi accepted Salianji's request for conditional release, following a positive report submitted by the Probation Service and the agreement of prosecutor Genci Mane. Former MP Ervin Salianji himself was present at the hearing.
At the end of the hearing, his defense attorney Ledjo Braho did not hesitate to reiterate that the trial against Salianja was entirely political.
The former Democratic MP was arrested in September 2024, after the Court of Appeal upheld the first-instance decision that found him guilty of false reporting. Salianji was sentenced to 1 year in prison in connection with the publication of an audio recording in 2018, where he claimed that Agron Xhafaj, the brother of former Interior Minister Fatmir Xhafaj, was involved in drug trafficking.
The case was followed by harsh political reactions at the time. Throughout the process, Salianji himself described the trial as politically rigged. (A2 Televizion)
