The threats coming from Serbia, Russia and China constitute a serious challenge to the stability of the Balkans. This was stated by former Defense Minister Fatmir Mediu on the show "Çdo kënt me Merita Hakljan", who suggests that Albania should follow the example of the Baltic countries for an operational strategy with joint funding with other countries in the region.
"Albania needs a clear strategy on what operational levels it should build on land, air and sea. Not even 5% comes to Albania and to make any financing effective we must have joint financing like in the Baltic countries. Building joint military structures like the Baltic countries to cope with a possible aggression. Article 5 protects us from everything without thinking about how to defend ourselves while this will have its own problems in the event of a possible aggression in the Balkans. Developments in Ukraine should make us think," says the media on A2 CNN.
According to him, a key element that has been missing in Albania so far is coordinated political cooperation with other Balkan states. This cooperation, Mediu emphasizes, could enable a common stance to confront external threats and help maintain peace and stability in the region.
"While Vučić is speaking, the Albanian government should have spoken out long ago due to the problems of Russia and China's relations and the tensions they are trying to create. This should have been an alarm bell for Albania. The only country that has taken measures is Croatia. The first element should have been political cooperation to reach a common position. It has never happened that the Albanian state has reflected any specific policy on the threats coming to the Balkan region. The second element is the construction of military deterrence and it should be an agreement of the type of the Baltic countries and we can build a third dimension, which is the economic one. What I see as positive in this agreement is the involvement at the military level. Involvement at the political level would make Kosovo more valuable, because it is a security hotspot in the Balkans like Bosnia, Montenegro and Macedonia. The extension of this political, military and economic cooperation should be done with all Balkan countries, preferably Bosnia."
On the other hand, Mediu praises Croatia as a country that has taken immediate measures to strengthen military positions and secure international support, understanding the importance of a coordinated response.
"Security issues have become NATO's primary issues. Alliances are not in their traditional form, but we do not have a national security council, it is not a serious institution to deal with these issues. The government is more hesitant because of its relations with Vucic, while Croatia has made its position clear. It is the only country that has invested in military operational growth."
