"You can't stay an MP forever", Xhafaj: Limiting the number of

Fatmir Xhafaj supported the idea of limiting the mandates of an MP, which came as a proposal from the experts of the committee for deepening reforms for good governance, the rule of law and anti-corruption.

"In the conditions that we are not in the majority, a good part of us, where a part is elected by the party, for example for the mayor, I do not agree with there being a limitation that they are elected by the people, is there a need to have a limitation of mandates for deputies, you cannot remain an MP forever and to create a kind of culture that the seats are not eternal", said Xhafaj.

Another proposal by the experts was that nominations for independent instances should not be made only by political parties. The case of the Ombudsman was taken as an example, which also found agreement with the head of the commission.

"Today, the Ombudsman is proposed by the opposition, it doesn't matter, the opposition is a biased process, can we have some alternatives that are not a political consensus, but the judgment of some actors, be a mechanism, a body that is formed by representatives of local government, civil society, so a national quorum. Candidates compete there, be elected there and then parliament only votes between these candidacies," added Xhafaj.

Fatmir Xhafaj remained silent when experts proposed changes to the Assembly's regulations regarding the enforceability of Constitutional Court decisions, while the majority recently ignored two decisions regarding the mandate of socialist Olta Xhaçka.

For skeptics, the commission chairman had a message.

The commission's work deadline ends at the end of March, but at the request of the technical secretariat, an extension will be requested until the end of July. (A2 Televizion)
