Osmani: Kosovo remains committed to membership in the Council of Europe

President Vjosa Osmani hosted a delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe today, during which she emphasized that Kosovo remains committed to joining the Council of Europe, and will therefore continue to strengthen the protection of human rights and the rule of law.

Osmani expressed gratitude for the support of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) to Kosovo's institutions and welcomed the engagement of this mission, which for the first time will monitor elections in Kosovo.

The meeting emphasized that the February 9 elections are the first regular elections held in accordance with the new Law on General Elections, so the president assessed this moment as an important step in improving democratic processes in the country.

Osmani underlined the need for a special focus on the representation of women in all phases of the electoral process, as well as respecting the rights of persons with disabilities, ensuring full and equal access to polling stations. (A2 Televizion)

Kosovo applied for membership in the CoE in 2022. Although it was expected to be on the agenda for accession at the Council of Ministers meeting on May 16, 2024, this did not happen. After the recommendation for Kosovo's accession was passed by the CoE Parliamentary Assembly, several states imposed a condition that Kosovo establish an association if it wants to become a member of the Strasbourg-based organization.
