The immigrant vote looks set to be a major issue leading up to the parliamentary elections to be held on May 11.
And now that the online diaspora registration process has begun, the first problems have emerged, which are being denounced by the opposition.
The Vice President of the Democratic Party, Oerd Bylykbashi, raised the concern that Albanians who want to vote are facing, because a large number of their identity cards have expired.
While asking the government to react to resolve the situation, Bylykbashi stated that the majority may attempt to register only the people it has under its patronage.
"While the law is strict and says that anyone with a valid document can register. A large part of them have expired documents. Fortunately, the ODIHR tells us that 600 thousand people have expired documents. This is the government's duty. In 2021 and 2023, in a similar situation, it issued a decision to extend the validity of the expired document only to vote. In Himara, they left 6,000 people without voting and robbed the municipality.
The government should adopt an act before January 11 to solve the problem. The constitution says that Albanian citizens have the right to vote. The Socialist Party will leave out those who do not have documents and renew only those that have patronage. The ministry has issued mobile consulates, something illegal. They only take them to those who want them”, Bylykbashi said on Off the Record to journalist Andrea Danglli. (A2 Televizion)
