Fewer and fewer babies are being heard crying in maternity wards. For a number of reasons, younger generations are hesitant to start families, writes A2.
"We face a challenging reality. We have a system that does not favor mothers to have a professional life. We do not have a good system of nurseries, kindergartens, schools...", says a citizen.
While a grandmother says: "I tell her to have a child and I'll take care of it. No, my mother, she says, where does this salary come from?"
Today's reality seems to have created divisions in opinion even for previous generations.
The United Nations' population projections, from a few days ago, predicted that in the next 30 years the number of births in Albania will be halved.
Pedagogist Nora Malaj tells A2 CNN: "A shocking figure. There are several factors: economic stability, young people who are not ready to take on the responsibility of family and parenthood, leaving the country."
Although incentive initiatives have long been undertaken by state institutions, such as the baby bonus, the effects are not yet being felt and birth rates continue to decline.
"Policies must be concrete and the state must be a social state. To create packages dedicated to parents, to children... Adding assistant teachers, in new buildings the first floors should be at the service of young couples, starting with kindergartens, nurseries, standardized meals," Malaj further emphasizes.
