Ownership hinders maintenance, Gjirokastra's characteristic houses at risk

The characteristic architecture and, of course, the history of Gjirokastra's housing is the main reason why this city has become one of the main destinations for tourists coming to our country.

It is precisely the values of these dwellings that make Gjirokastra a city protected by UNESCO today. But these very dwellings risk turning into ruins and losing their value due to ownership problems, which do not allow for their maintenance or restoration.

A concrete case is one of the iconic houses of Gjirokastra, the Angonat family. Unable to make it open to the public, the regional directorate of cultural heritage has been forced to carry out external restorations to preserve the shape and facade.

While other homes seem to have reached their end or are very close to it as a result of being left to the mercy of fate and the inability of cultural heritage institutions to intervene.

According to the regional directorate of cultural heritage in Gjirokastra, the number of cultural monument dwellings that need intervention is over 20, of which only a small number are maintained.

While the real number of characteristic houses in Gjirokastra that need intervention is much higher.  (A2 Televizion)
