Deep brain stimulation, a treatment for Parkinson's patients, is carried

In the Neurosurgery Service, at QSUNT, a successful intervention was performed - DBS (deep brain stimulation) for Parkinson's disease, on a 50-year-old patient, announced the Minister of Health Albana Koçiu. "This specific and extremely necessary intervention for the treatment of Parkinson's is fully covered by the state budget, bringing 0 (zero) cost to the patient," she wrote in a Facebook post.

"Gratitude to the medical team: Prof. Dr. Artur Xhumari, Prof. Dr. Ridvan Alimehmeti, Dr. Gramoz Brace, anesthesiologist-resuscitator Dr. Mithat Demneri, neurologist Dr. Shk. Florian Dashi, Prof. Ilirjana Zekja, Specialists: Dr. Aurora, Dr. Kejsi, Dr. Sidorela, as well as nurses: Manjola Pjetri, Ganimete Arapi and Anxhela Gjonaj", said the minister.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a surgical treatment for Parkinson's disease that helps control motor symptoms. The procedure involves implanting electrodes in the brain, which send electrical impulses to regulate abnormal nerve cell activity. The device is controlled by a stimulator placed on the chest, similar to a pacemaker. DBS has been approved by the FDA since 1997 for the treatment of tremors and since 2002 for advanced symptoms.

According to the Parkinson's Foundation , this therapy helps reduce tremors, stiffness and involuntary movements. It also reduces the need for medications, reducing their side effects. For carefully selected patients, DBS can significantly improve quality of life, writes A2 CNN. However, it is not a cure for Parkinson's and does not help with symptoms that are not related to movement, such as memory or speech problems.

The cost of the procedure ranges from $35,000 to $100,000, depending on the country and institution where it is performed. DBS is not suitable for all patients; selection is based on medical history and response to medications.

After surgery, patients must undergo a period of rehabilitation and adjustment of the stimulator. Most patients experience significant improvement in motor function within a few weeks or months. The device can be adjusted by the doctor to ensure maximum effectiveness. Despite the benefits, DBS does not stop the progression of the disease. (A2 Televizion)
