Tens of thousands of supporters of President Aleksandar Vučić took part in a demonstration in Belgrade, following months of anti-government protests around the country.

A monitoring organization reported that about 55,000 people gathered in front of the National Assembly. Although some of Vučić's supporters had traveled from neighboring countries, including northern Kosovo, the turnout was lower than in anti-regime demonstrations last month, A2 writes.

Serbia has seen regular demonstrations since November, when a shelter collapse at a Novi Sad railway station killed 15 people, sparking widespread public anger. Many citizens blame widespread corruption in the ruling Progressive Party for the tragedy.

Serbian leader Vučić promoted the demonstration on Saturday, introducing the so-called Movement for the People and the State, which he said would save Serbia from forces trying to destroy the country. In a speech at the event, he called on prosecutors to restore order and peace. Vučić claims that the student-led protest has threatened peace and stability in the country, accusing the participants of being paid by foreign intelligence agencies.

"We will not allow those from outside or inside to oppress our country. Let me tell you that the color revolution is over. They can go as far as they want, but nothing good will come of it," said the Serbian President.

Vučić also criticized state broadcaster RTS, describing it as a key participant in the color revolution. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban addressed Vučić's supporters in a video message.

"Serbian patriots can rely on Hungarian patriots," was his message.  (A2 Televizion)
