The truth behind a secret US military base built in the Greenland ice sheet in the 1960s has been revealed. Camp Century, now located 30 meters below the surface of the ice, was a feat of American engineering and featured a nuclear reactor. The base was planned to be the world's first nuclear-powered military base, according to National Geographic.
But there was more to this base than that, and some activities were secret even to the Danish government that controls Greenland. Project Iceworm was a secret United States project that planned to turn Camp Century into a ballistic missile base, according to declassified documents. Greenland was the ideal location for this project because it was difficult to attack, was located close to Russia, writes A2 CNN.
The military intended to house 600 nuclear-tipped missiles in two miles of underground tunnels that could be aimed at the Soviet Union. No one suspected the missiles at the base until 1968, when an American plane carrying nuclear bombs was shot down and an investigation into American activities at the site was launched.
The project to move missiles through tunnels thousands of miles also became too difficult to maintain. Surface temperatures could reach -70 degrees, and winter included 24-hour darkness. Life in the tunnel was difficult, as soldiers had to use saws to cut through the ever-increasing ice, threatening everything inside.
Camp Century didn't last a decade and now remains a forgotten place, its true significance shrouded in classified documents. A year ago, NASA scientist Chad Greene discovered this deserted base while flying over the vast glacier, where advanced radar revealed structures belonging to the base. (A2 Televizion)
