MEP Fredi Beleri has been placed at the center of controversy in the European Parliament after his decision to support Elon Musk's "favorite", Cypriot YouTuber Fidias Panayiotou, for the position of vice-chair of the Special Committee "Shield for European Democracy".
It all started when the New Democracy MEP from Himara came out against his party, proposing MEP Panayiotou with the argument that "he is Greek".
After the vote, Phidias Panayiotou was not elected after losing 33-21 to a socialist candidate. However, this move by Beleris provoked a strong reaction from SYRIZA MEP Kostas Arvanitis, who accused New Democracy of an alliance with the far right and Elon Musk.
Also opposing Beleri was his colleague from New Democracy Elise Vozeberg, who is also the chairwoman of Mitsotakis' group of deputies in the European Parliament and at the same time, chairwoman of the Transport and Tourism Committee, who also "emptied" him. She explained in a post that Beleri's proposal was a personal choice " and does not fit with the political line of the New Democracy Eurogroup ."
In fact, according to Greek media reports, Beleri did not inform the head of the New Democracy MEPs, Eliza Vozeberg, who received information from the head of the Cypriot DISY MEPs, Loukas Fourlas.
For his part, Beleri justified his action by saying that it was a personal choice based solely on Phidias Panagiotou's "Greek origin."
"At today's meeting of the newly formed Special Committee of the European Parliament "Shield for European Democracy", the issue of filling the post of Vice-President was raised. There was no candidate from the European People's Party. I chose to support the independent Cypriot MEP, Fidias Panayiotou, based solely on his Greek origin and nothing more," Beleri said in a post on the 'X' platform.
We recall that the billionaire owner of 'X', Elon Musk, had also reacted to this specific position, intervening by asking for Phidias to be voted for because "he is smart, steadfast, and sincerely cares about people . " (A2 Televizion)
