A video filmed in the northeastern part of the Catalonia region, showing the moment a giant shark was accidentally caught by a fisherman, has gone viral on social media.

The 6.7-meter basking whale (Cetorhinus maximus), which is listed as a protected species by the authorities, was caught by an ordinary fisherman, who, alarmed, was forced to immediately notify the local marine life foundation - CRAM.

He brought the shark ashore in Port de la Selva where experts determined it was a female. CRAM confirmed that the catch was accidental and that the fisherman had followed all necessary protocols by immediately notifying them.

The video, which has over 150,000 views on the 'X' platform, shows people gathered around the giant creature as it washes ashore, a fishing net tangled in its tail.

Basking sharks are the second largest type of fish in the world, and the largest to be found in the Mediterranean Sea. Despite their large size and fearsome mouth, they are not aggressive towards humans and feed mainly on plankton. (A2 Televizion)
