The President of the United States, Joe Biden, through a decision, has canceled the death sentences for 37 federal prisoners who were sentenced to death by American courts, writes A2 CNN. The ruling commutes the death penalty to life in prison without parole. The decision comes a few weeks after Donald Trump took the keys to the White House. Biden, through a statement, said that the US should stop the death penalty at the federal level.

Make no mistake: I condemn these killers, grieve for the victims of their heinous acts, and grieve for all the families who have suffered unimaginable and irreparable loss. I am more convinced than ever that we must stop using the death penalty at the federal level. In good conscience, I cannot stand back and allow a new administration to resume executions that I have stopped.

Biden's move would derail Trump's plan to resume a rapid pace of executions. Unlike executive orders, pardons cannot be reversed by the president's successor. Four people who were not pardoned by Joe Biden include a former Marine who killed two young women and later a female Navy officer; a Las Vegas man convicted of kidnapping and killing a 12-year-old girl; a Chicago pediatrician who fatally shot a patient to prevent her from testifying in a Medicare fraud investigation; and two people convicted in a kidnapping-for-ransom scheme that resulted in the murders of five Russian and Georgian immigrants.

The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 US states. Six other states, including Arizona, California, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Tennessee, have moratoriums in place. Earlier this month, Biden commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 people and pardoned 39 others convicted of non-violent crimes. He also pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, who was facing sentencing in two criminal cases. The US Constitution gives the president full power to grant pardons and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment. (A2 Televizion)
