Employees at the U.S. Institute of Peace began receiving layoffs effective Friday night, five people told Politico. While the full scope of the layoffs was not immediately clear, George Foote, the longtime external counsel for the U.S. Institute, said nearly all U.S.-based employees had received layoff notices, with a few exceptions, including regional vice presidents responsible for coordinating with overseas employees.
He said between 50 and 80 overseas staff had been "essentially abandoned" after the Department for Government Efficiency appeared to have cut funding for travel, salaries and communications.
Although overseas staff have not yet received layoff notices, they have been instructed to prepare for relocation within the next two weeks.
The institute, an independent organization funded by Congress, promotes conflict resolution mechanisms and fosters world peace. It has an endowment of nearly $80 million and a designated headquarters building in Washington. (A2 Televizion)
