Italian citizenship referendum, Meloni against the measure, urges Italians not

Italians are voting today in referendums on easing citizenship rules and strengthening protections for workers amid concerns that low turnout could invalidate the vote. On citizenship, Italians are answering the question of whether they support reducing the residency period required to apply for Italian citizenship to 5 years, A2 CNN reports.

A citizen of a non-EU country, without marriage or blood ties to Italy, must currently live for 10 years in the country before applying for citizenship, a process that can take years.

Supporters claim the reform could affect some 2.5 million foreign nationals living in the country, most of them Albanians, and would bring Italy's citizenship law in line with those of other European countries such as Germany and France. The measure was proposed by Italy's main trade unions and left-wing opposition parties, A2 CNN reports.

Prime Minister Meloni said she would show up at the polling stations but would not cast her vote. The left has criticized this move as anti-democratic, as it does not help to exceed the 50 percent turnout required to make the vote valid. (A2 Televizion)
